FPL bargain defenders to pick for your fantasy premier league team on a budget ahead of the 2022-23 season.
The importance of defenders in FPL has risen exponentially over the past seasons. The points accumulated by the likes of Trent and Cancelo have been comparable to the game’s most expensive midfielders and forwards, and the points they can provide relative to their price are the best in the game.
That being said, a select few players can save you money and act as cover for your starting defenders. So here are the 5 best bargain defenders in FPL for 22/23.

5. Joachim Andersen, Crystal Palace (£4.5m)
Crystal Palace statistically was just slightly off Liverpool’s defence over the entire season. They underperformed on their xGC meaning they’re due a few clean sheets. He got 4A last season, showing he can contribute with attacking points.
He scored 124 points, the most for any player at this price point. The only issue I see for him is that Palace faces Arsenal, Man City, and Liverpool in the first 4 games, so he’d be one to keep an eye on and buy following this tough run of fixtures.
4. Neco Williams, Nottingham Forrest (£4.0m)
One of the few defenders valued at £4.0m is expected to get a lot of game time. He is set to play in an attacking right-wing-back role in an exciting Nottingham Forrest side. Last season he played well at Fulham on loan, where he got 2G and 2A and kept 6 clean sheets.
He loves bombing forward and getting involved in the attack, and he took 1.4 shots and gave 1 key pass/90. Most importantly, his value is the minimum possible, and you’re getting a player who could chip in with a few points if one of your starting 11 misses a match.
3. Lewis Dunk, Brighton and Hove Albion(£4.5m)
Brighton’s captain has emerged as a great option following his price drop. Dunk was a constant goal threat, but he was given a more defensive role when Duffy played, but once he was dropped, he was back on the scoresheet.
He also leads a very solid backline that kept 11 clean sheets last season. A first-team starter of his quality at this price is unusual, so you should look to capitalize on it.
2. Sven Botman, Newcastle United (£4.5m)
A Ligue 1 winner with Lille, Botman comes in with a solid pedigree and will be the one who the Newcastle management looks at as one who can lead the club up the table. Newcastle is no longer a relegation-battling club and is now one looking to finish in the Conference League spot.
The Magpies have tough fixtures after the opening day match against Nottingham, so Botman could be someone you look to rotate.
1. Jonny Otto, Wolves (£4.5m)
Wolves had one of the best defences for the majority of the season, with Jose Sa, in particular, getting a lot of praise. Jonny did miss games due to injury but is now fully fit, and the other RWB, Semedo, is still injured; Jonny is expected to get a run in the team.
When called upon at the end of last season, he scored 2 goals in the final 12 game weeks. Wolves would be expected to be in the top 8 defences and hence keep a good number of clean sheets. He can also play on both wings meaning more minutes—a solid pick as your 4th defender.
