5. Demarai Gray (Everton) – (£5.5m)
Rafa Benitez might not have done a great job at Everton, but his decision to sign Demarai Gray last summer was massive for the club. With the Toffees thrust headlong into the intense relegation battle, Gray was a huge player for Everton.
He scored 5 goals and provided 4 assists in the Premier League last season. He provided 1 assist in the crazy comeback win against Crystal Palace and also assisted the goal against Chelsea in the 1-0 win against Tuchel’s side. He had the second highest goal involvements for Everton in the Premier League last season. Gray had an xG of 4.5 and an xA of 4.3 last season and also averaged 2.4 shot-creating actions per game.
It’s hard to imagine where Everton would have finished without him in the side. With Richarlison out of the club, Gray will be an important player for Frank Lampard next season.
4. Jordan Pickford (Everton) – (£4.0m)
Another Everton player who was a key part of his side’s relegation battle was Jordan Pickford. He didn’t have a great season, but towards the end of the season, his influence was vital for Everton.
Everton also had a poor season defensively and gave away too many goals. They conceded 1.7 goals per game and made 10 errors leading to goals last season.
Pickford recorded 3.3 saves per game and a save percentage of 67%. In the 3-2 win against Crystal Palace that confirmed Everton’s survival, Pickford made 3 crucial saves against shots taken from inside the box.
He accumulated 116 points last season and at £4m he’s a great choice as backup keeper for your fantasy team and could get vital points during the course of the season
3. Jack Harrison (Leeds United) – (£6.0m)
Jack Harrison has earned the third most points from players in the bottom six sides as he was also a player who had a big impact on his side’s survival from relegation.
With 8 goals and 1 assist in the Premier League, he had the second most goal involvements for Leeds United with only Raphina above him. He also recorded 1.5 successful dribbles per game and completed 1.2 key passes per game. Harrison had an xA of 2.6 and an xG of 4.0 in the Premier League last season. He also recorded 79 shot-creating actions (2.2 per game) for Leeds last season.
Leeds are quite an unpredictable side but Harrison managed to rack up 117 points over the course of last season and at £6m he is a great differential pick. His quality is undeniable, and it’s likely that will have a productive season again.
2. Che Adams (Southampton) – (£6.5m)
Southampton’s Che Adams has asserted himself as the Saints’ focal point in attack. He’s got power and finishing prowess and was a bright spark for Southampton last season.
Adams notched up 7 goals and 3 assists for the Saints last season and was pivotal in their bid to stay in the top flight. He also had an xG of 7.1 and xA of 2.6. However, what were telling stats of his are 2.25 shot creation actions per 90, 2.16 shots per game, and 2.03 progressive carries per 90.
Adams could be a great squad pick considering he’s poised to continue to bang them in for Southampton in 2022/23 after nailing the starting spot up front and making it his own. After scoring a modest return of 103 points last season, he could be a pick that will go under the radar by most FPL managers.
1. James Ward-Prowse (Southampton) – (£6.5m)
One of the most underrated players in the Premier League, James Ward-Prowse, earned the most points out of all players from the bottom six teams racking up 159 points last season. The 27-year-old is one of the best set-piece takers in the Premier League, and his ability from dead ball situations is well known.
While playing as a no.8 for Southampton, he scored an exceptional 10 goals and bagged up 5 assists in 36 Premier League appearances. Ward-Prowse also created 8 big chances and scored the most free-kick goals in the Premier League last season. Despite playing in quite a deeper position, he had the most goal involvements for the Saints, five more than the next nearest player.
Ward-Prowse had an xA of 6.2 and 5.4 xG with an npxG of 2.3 for Southampton last season and at £6.5m he’s our top pick for your fantasy team from the sides that finished at the bottom of the table last season.
