There were some fantastic games across Europe over the weekend, with some big names dropping points. Things are heating up in the Serie A with some major upsets in Italy this week narrowing the gap between 1st and 5th to just 3 points.

Meanwhile, Bayern dropped points at Augsburg to throw the Bundesliga title race wide open. In France however, the drama unfolded in the bottom half of the table.

We take a look at the most exciting games from gameweek 7 of the Bundesliga and Serie A, and gameweek 8 of Ligue 1.

Bundesliga

Augsburg 1-0 Bayern Munich

The scoreline may not suggest it, but the Bavarian derby turned out to be an exhilarating game. Bayern suffered their first loss of the season, leaving them win-less in 4 games now.

Having beaten Bayern in the same fixture from last season, Augsburg started this game in similar vein as they threatened the visitors’ goal in the opening stages. Despite losing 3 on the spin at home, Augsburg were clearly up for this game. Their 8 shots on goal before half time were more than any side had managed against Bayern in the Bundesliga this season.

Things were level at half time, but Bayern were undone by a set piece yet again in their 3rd straight match, as a long ball and a tap in for Mergim Berisha put the hosts in front. Augsburg then took a backseat after their goal, which was their only attempt on target in the half.

Polish keeper Rafał Gikiewicz was the hero for Augsburg yet again as he produced save after save. In the dying moments, Neuer came into the opposition box and thought he had scored the equalizer, but Gikiewicz produced a stunning point blank save, followed by another fine stop seconds later.

The game was not just a fantastic footballing spectacle but has also caused ripples across the league, putting Bayern’s title defense and sustained dominance in question.

Serie A

Udinese 1-3 Inter Milan

Milan vs Napoli, Roma vs Atalanta, and Monza vs Juve – the Serie A produced some great games and results this weekend, but the game which saw 4 goals between Udinese and Inter at the Dacia Arena was the pick of the bunch.

Inter have been very inconsistent this season, not having mustered up 2 wins on the trot since the opening 2 weeks of the season. The Nerazzurri started the game well, as a Barella freekick put them in the lead in just 5 minutes. But both teams were throwing back to back punches at each other, as Udinese soon scored to level things up.

The home side came firing in the second half. Spaniard Deulofeu hit the post in a passage of play which saw 3 consecutive efforts from Le Zebrette surprisingly not finding the back of the net.

Inter have been very leaky in defense this season, conceding 8 goals before this game. That trend continued as sustained pressure from Udinese saw them score 2 goals in the last 10 minutes of the game to complete a comeback rout of Inter.

With 5 wins on the trot, the historic club now sit just 1 point behind leaders Napoli in 3rd place thanks to a victory in this thrilling affair in Udine.

Ligue 1

Montpellier 2-1 Strasbourg

Montpellier came into this game with 2 consecutive defeats, and faced a Strasbourg side facing struggles of their own with no wins this season.

The home side started the game in great fashion. After nearly scoring in their first 2 corners, they finally broke the deadlock with their 3rd attempt inside the first 20 minutes.

Strasbourg who are win-less at the Stade de la Mosson since their return to the top flight in 2017, hoped to change that record going into the second half. They looked more convincing after the break, with Habib Diallo’s strike for the visitors just 5 minutes before the end of normal time signaling a frantic finish to the game.

Montpellier didn’t have much time to search for the winner. Despite being denied by the crossbar in the subsequent minutes, the hosts were rewarded for their continuous pressure as they got a penalty deep into stoppage time.

Captain Téji Savanier stepped up to convert the resultant spot kick in the 95th minute, causing wild scenes on the bench and in the stands. Montpellier president Laurent Nicollin couldn’t contain his emotions on the touchline after his team won this nail-biting contest.
