Manchester United had another underwhelming season in the Premier League. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked during the season after a spell of poor results.
Ralf Ragnick came in as an interim manager with a huge European reputation. However, the German failed to improve their performances. Manchester United ended up finishing 6th and only managed to scrape into the Europa League spots.
They have now brought in Erik Ten Hag, who is making the right noises so far. They have also been quite active in the transfer market and are signing the kind of players that United haven’t signed in years.
Let’s have a look at the best players you could pick in your fantasy team next season from United based on their performances last season.
5. Jadon Sancho (£7.5m)
Jadon Sancho’s first season at United didn’t go according to plan, just like everything else at the club. He came to Man United as one of the most creative players in Europe but struggled to make an impact in the Premier League.
However, there were a few games where he did display how good he can be under the right circumstances. Sancho had an xG of 3.3 in the Premier League last season. He also recorded 82 shot-creating actions last season (2.8 per game).
His goal involvements were drastically low last season with 3 goals and 3 assists, but that was mainly down to the whole side performing poorly for long periods of the season.
Sancho’s form in this pre-season has been superb. He has scored in three of his last four games and has looked brilliant alongside Martial and Rashford in this new look front three under Ten Hag.
This could be the season where we see the Sancho we thought we would when he signed for Manchester United. There are several doubts surrounding Manchester United for next season, but Sancho is someone who has the ability to be a huge player for the Red Devils next season.
4. Fred (£5.5m)
Fred was another player whose performances were consistent in a team filled with inconsistent players. His performances towards the second half of the season improved as Ragnick used him well in a double pivot.
Fred completed 2.2 long balls and 1.6 chipped passes per game and recorded an impressive 83% passing accuracy in the opposition half. Last season, he also recorded an excellent 3.8 progressive passes per game in the Premier League.
Fred also recorded 57 shot-creating actions last season (2 per game). He had 2.6 progressive carries with the ball (excluding 40% of the defensive pitch).
Fred is a midfielder who provides a vast skillset. He is not world-class at any particular skill, but he is good at almost everything he does and is one of the most complete midfielders at the club. Although he scored only 93 points last season, it’s likely that Ten Hag will use Fred a lot next season and he could be a pick that won’t be selected by the majority of FPL team managers.
3. David De Gea (£5.0m)
David De Gea was arguably Manchester United’s most important player last season. The number of points he saved was crucial for Man United to scrape into the top six.
De Gea made 3.4 saves per game, the fifth most in the Premier League. His distribution was a part of his game that attracted a lot of criticism. However, there was an eye-catching improvement in his passing last season. He completed an impressive 3.1 long balls per game.
Ten Hag’s style of play requires a keeper who possesses quality distribution. David De Gea will need to improve his passing, but his shot stopping will likely be at its best again. He notched up 132 points last season so he’s a great pick in goal for your fantasy team.
2. Bruno Fernandes (£10.0m)
Bruno Fernandes was another player who underperformed by his standards last season. Although his numbers weren’t poor, the dip after the 2020/21 season was very evident. He did score 10 goals and provided 6 assists in 36 appearances which are quite low because of what he is capable of.
Bruno completed 3.3 long passes and 3.7 chipped passes per game while also recording 2.5 key passes per game. He also created 15 big chances, the most in the United squad and more than double the next best, Ronaldo. Bruno had an xG of 9.7 and an npxG of 8.2 last season and 4 shot-creating actions per game.
Bruno’s game could excel under the right coach, and Ten Hag could be the man to do it. The Portuguese would be a good choice for your fantasy team next season, despite being slightly over-priced.
1. Cristiano Ronaldo (£10.5m)
No surprise as Cristiano Ronaldo is the player with the most points earned in FPL from Manchester United after scoring 18 goals in 30 appearances last season. If we take his goals out, United could have finished way below what they did. Not only the number of his goals but the timing of his goals was also quite important.
He had the most goal involvements of any Manchester United player in the Premier League last season with 21, that’s 5 more than the next closest player. Ronaldo also had 2.5 shot-creating actions per game. He also had an xG of 16.5 in the Premier League last season and an npxG of 14.2 which he bettered.
There are still rumors that he wants to leave Old Trafford due to the club not being in the Champions League.
But in terms of picking a goalscorer, he would be a brilliant pick for your fantasy team next season. However, it’s likely that he’ll be one of the most selected players in the FPL next season should he stay on at United.
