FPL Team Of The Week Gameweek 1

FPL week one is in the books, so let’s have a quick look at the highest-scoring team for this week and see if there is anyone you should keep an eye on.

The screenshot of the team here belongs to a manager named “Real Social Dad”, who had a barnstormer of an opening weekend, ending the week with 119 points.

Defence

He went for an unconventional backline with Zinchenko, Perisic, and Trippier, avoiding the template of Trent, Cancelo and James.

Mendy in goal was a good choice, but overall I believe sticking with the tried and tested would benefit you in the long run. If Perisic had started, he probably would have been in Sessegnon’s position to score that goal, but it wasn’t meant to be.

Zinchenko and Tripper are safe long-term bets and would save you a lot of money as they both are £5m each.

Midfielders

The Salah and Martinelli picks were safe, part of the template picks, but James Ward-Prowse’s addition was an inspired one.

A lot of people thought Aston Villa would perform very well and looked to add the likes of Bailey, Coutinho and Cash, unfortunately, that gamble didn’t pay off.

The midfield he picked wasn’t too off the norm, JWP and Coutinho aren’t someone who I’d go for. They may be good picks for a particular game week, but Southampton and Villa both looked awful in their opening fixtures, so better avoid their players.

Attack

Here is where it all kicks off, Haaland, Mitrovic and Nunez, what a frontline! Haaland has a great track record when it comes to scoring hattricks on debuts, well, he didn’t get 3, but a brace isn’t too shabby. Add to that being triple captained, and he got a massive 39-point haul.

Managers who had Kane in their team already seem to be regretting their decision as Haaland has been the most transferred-in player, with 876k managers buying him since the last game week.

Mitrovic was arguably the standout player of the week, a brace against Liverpool, forcing Van Dijk into a mistake, not things you hear daily. The World Cup-bound striker put in a performance that has seen him be purchased by 464k managers.

Nunez didn’t start the game but did well in the minutes he played and he was involved in both of Liverpool’s goals, first with a goal and then an assist. He could be valuable in the long run, especially given what we’ve seen from him so far.

Players To Keep An Eye On

Personally, I wouldn’t have gone for such a front-heavy team as you’re bound to suffer if it’s a low-scoring week.

The one player who stands out and one not a lot of managers have gone for is Darwin Nunez.

Against Fulham, Liverpool looked flat until he came on, and it is likely he’ll start the next game; at £9m, he could be a slightly cheaper option to Haaland and Kane.
