Last season, Lewandowski did what he does best! 35 goals and 4 assists in 34 games saw him pick up yet another golden boot and his 10th Bundesliga title. He has won everything at Bayern and it looks like he wants to start a new adventure.
Winning the Bundesliga has become so much of a routine that a lot of Bayern players don’t get as much joy from anymore. We have seen so many players leave because they want a new challenge. Alaba, Thiago, Sule and now Lewandowski are hinting that Bayern’s dominance domestically is actually off putting.
Robert Lewandowski without a doubt is one of the key reasons for Bayern Munich’s stranglehold on the Bundesliga title. But with one year left on his contract, the player and the club have reached a crossroads. Lewandowski at 33 is looking for one final bumper contract while the club want to stick to their rigid wage structure.
Over the past few weeks, things have been really kicking off between Lewandowski and the Bayern hierarchy. “As of today one thing is certain, that my story with Bayern Munich is over and after everything that took place in recent months I cannot imagine further good cooperation,” Lewandowski claimed during an interview while on national duty.
In the same interview, he also said, “I am aware the transfer will be the best solution for both parties. I believe that Bayern will not stop me (forcibly) just because it has the opportunity.”
After such explosive comments, all bridges seemed to be burnt between the two parties and it only means that we are most likely going to see the Pole pull on another team’s jersey soon, but who is it going to be?
The Biggest Rumour: Barcelona
This came out of the blue, but Barcelona are the front runner in the chase for the Pole’s signature. Following the meltdown caused by Messi’s exit, the club has found some stability under Xavi. He led the club to a second-place finish and is looking to build the next great Barca team.
The signing of Aubameyang, Ferran and Adama bolstered Barca’s firepower in January, but this signing would be a game changer. Madrid’s success this season wouldn’t have sat well with the Barca faithful, a signing of this kind would be a statement of intent. If they are able to resign Dembele, they would have one of the most dangerous frontlines in the world.
Barca improved a lot since December after signing a good finisher in Aubameyang, but Lewandowski will arrive as one of the best players in the world. His numbers over the past decade have been staggering. He has averaged a contribution of over a goal a game last season and took 4.8 shots per match.
He’s a proven winner who could be the one to fill the void left by Messi at Barca.
Wildcard option: Chelsea
The Todd Boehly consortium has finally completed its takeover of the club following months of delay. What a start to this new era the signing of Robert Lewandowski would be! Chelsea under Abrahamovic were absolutely ruthless, if anyone was not up to the club’s standards they’d be shown the door in no time.
While we are yet to see how Chelsea operate under the new ownership, it’d be on-brand for them to sell their most expensive player after one disappointing season.
Lukaku’s return to the club has hardly been the fairytale everyone expected it to be. Rather, it felt like Chelsea had signed the player we had seen at Manchester United. Poor touches, not involved in the play enough and being more of a hindrance on the field.
The interview he gave midway through the season was a disaster and that was exactly when a huge portion of Chelsea fans turned on him.
Lewandowski would solve most of the problems at Chelsea with respect to their front line. The Blues will create loads of chances and need someone in the box to convert them. This is bread and butter for the Pole.
Chelsea have a poor track record when it comes to signing strikers, but signing Lewandowski will surely be a masterstroke if they can pull it off.
